Copper Woods Alpaca Farm
By Don Scipione

One day, my wife asked if I would be interested in raising alpaca’s. I just kind of laughed at the idea and life went on its merry way. Then one day, in 2004, we were up at the Windsor Fair and we saw a sign with an arrow which pointed the way to alpacas. My wife said, "I don’t know about you, but I am going to see some alpaca’s." So, we ventured over to the alpaca tent and our passion began. We visited local farms and found all the alpaca owners/breeders to be more than happy to share their passions. We really fell in love with suri alpacas with their long, draping, lustrous fiber. Little did we know, we had a local Suri Farm right in town. We visited with and purchased our first two alpacas from Royal River Alpaca Company. We got a lot more than what we bargained for. Ken and Claudia Raessler not only aided us in getting into the business, but also have become our friends.

With a five and half acre wooded lot we started on our venture. In the Spring of 2005 we had our lot cleared, stumped, and raked out. We then had a barn built and we put our fencing up. The first of the animals arrived in September of 2005. By that time we had acquired a herd of 6 alpacas. We had our first birth on our Farm on October 1st (our wedding anniversary). Our second birth on the farm was on Mothers Day of 2006. Now, the herd is up to 21 Alpacas. This upcoming year we have 7 babies due to hit the ground. How exciting.

Our family has become very involved in all of the aspects of the alpaca industry. We compete in some of the shows which take us on the road. Pam has joined up with two other alpaca breeders, starting up Fiber Pieces. We have also joined up with three other local suri breeders and have created NESA (Northeast Suri Alpacas).

We moved to Maine over 10 years ago with our twin boys Matt and Ben. Things were pretty uneventful until we started the alpaca life. With the advent of alpacas we have made so many friends and have learned many new talents. From web page building to herd health, we are just loving the alpaca lifestyle.
