The Mission of the Maine Alpaca Association is: To provide support for the alpaca owners, breeders and enthusiasts of Maine through education, camaraderie and cooperative marketing efforts. To educate the public about alpacas, their fiber and the many advantages of operating sustainable alpaca farms and fiber operations.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Maine Alpaca Association, subscribe to our quarterly newsletter or send an email to info@mainealpacafarms.com

Each month we ask one of our members farms to write a brief article about what is currently going on at their farm. Click here to view this month's featured farm. Each farm is a little different from the next. That is one of the things that makes this such an exciting business! Our membership represents a wide array of ages, lifestyle, farm size and experience. We probably have a member alot like you. Check back often to see a snapshot of another Maine Alpaca Farm. Prevoius snapshots will be available in the archives.

Welcome to the wonderful world of alpacas in Maine! This is a special time of year on Maine's alpaca farms as the spring crias are arriving and we finally get to see the results of our breeding decisions of 11 1/2 months ago. It's also shearing season, so you'll find either fully-fleeced or newly-naked alpacas. Whether a farm specializes in breeding livestock or fiber animals, there are a number of options for all that fiber: sell it raw to handspinners and artisans; send it to a mini-mill, spinnery, or cooperative to be made into rovings, batts, luxurious yarns, socks, and duvets; or weave it into durable heirloom-quality rugs. Both the commercial and cottage alpaca fiber industries are thriving. The demand is there -- but we need more farms to produce more fiber to meet the growing demand for high quality, US and locally grown and processed alpaca products.

If you wish to learn more we invite you to search the Farm Finder to visit a farm near you.
